Tying flies with the Duneland Fly Fishers

Last week Gary Krebs, John Clanton, and I made the trip to Northwest Indiana to visit another Indiana fly fishing club, the Duneland Fly Fishers. I didn’t get much tying done, I never do at these things. I spent most of the time talking to my buddy Jordan who I had not seen since last summer before he left to go guide in Alaska. Jordan’s father Dean hosts the tying at their house. The garage the tying is held in is a dream of mine. An entire garage dedicated to the outdoors. A large chunk of it is dominated by the table with overhead lights ornamented with every type of fly and fishing lure you can imagine. A deer head hangs on one wall, a fridge with beer on the other. Random fly fishing posters and signs hang everywhere. Near the door there is a wood stove and a reading chair. Throw a cot by the stove and you could be happy for the rest of your life. One of the members of Duneland Fly Fishers named Grayson Davis makes beautiful bamboo rods. I only wish I’d have been able to get some better shots of them. It was a really fun night. I met some good people who are passionate about fly fishing and you just can’t beat that.

Music Mondays: This is how we chill…

Hip hop in the early 90′s. Growing up then I didn’t realize how lucky I was to be exposed to positive music.  Back when dudes had fun and it wasn’t monetized.  I feel bad for the kids coming up these days listening to pre-packaged corporate rap. You can still find this stuff, but you gotta look deeper than you should have to for such amazing music.

I remember when this came out. This song was so dope to skate to. Pretty sure it was in a 411 video, but I could be wrong. My memory is shot. Too many concussions

The Pharcyde – Drop. Still one of the sickest videos ever done. I got their ’92 release from Thrasher or Transworld and listened til the tape was wore out. When this came out in ’95 it just showed the talent wasn’t blown on the first record. I still listen to this album at least once a month.

And finally one of the most talented dudes in the hip hop world, Common. I Used to Love H.E.R.

Gary Krebs popper tutorial – photos and video

Gary Krebs and John Clanton have been hard at work to put out a high quality tutorial on how to use Gary’s popper jigs and how to tie a Krebs popper. They’ve done a great job of making sure you get every little detail on how to tie this popper. I’ve known Gary for a few years now and I’m always learning something new from him. From casting to tying he’s been the guy I’ve gone to for advice and he’s always been there to give it, even if I didn’t want to hear it. Nine times out of ten I didn’t want to hear it even if I wasn’t waiting on a back cast because I’m as hard headed as they come. But I can honestly say because of him, I’m a better fisherman, so I kind of want to give some back and get him some exposure.

I’ve fished all sizes of these poppers and I’ve done extremely well with them. I fish the 1/4″ popper on small ponds and even though it’s the smallest of the sizes, it’s my favorite. Last summer this was my go to fly if I was fishing top water. This summer will be no different. Throwing a 7/16″ popper on a 7 weight is the way to go if you’re looking for that awesome smallie explosion. I live for that take. In the Midwest summer there is not much that beats the sight of a hungry smallmouth bass trying to kill a popper. Big poppers on the Tippecanoe River equals big smallies and a happy me.

Here’s the links to the photo tutorial and to the video tutorials.

You can purchase the Krebs Popper jig sets and foam locally from FlyMasters of Indianapolis or online from River Road Creations

**edit – I apologize for the vignetting on the smallie photos**

Sticker sighting

Thanks Dave! Dave was one of the first people to get a sticker which just shows he’s got good taste. I do believe I see a Fiberglass Manifesto sticker on that box as well.

Fly Fishing Film Tour: It’s on now

F3T started tonight. I’m pretty psyched to hopefully make it to the Grand Rapids show coming up on March 16th. Lots of amazing films and super talented folks making them. I just watched from Matt Schliske of Schliske Bamboo Fly Rods. He’s going to be introducing an entry level, lower priced bamboo rod this year. I’m a sucker for bamboo, but the price usually is way out of my league so this is definitely something to be on the lookout for.

Also, I know I’ve posted this before, but dammit it’s Pegboy.

Old fiberglass and old flies

I got to play with an old Nikon micro lens my buddy Jeremy brought over last night. Took some getting used to, but for an old lens it turned out some good stuff.

I know squat about fiberglass fly rods, that’s the realm of The Fiberglass Manifesto, but what I’ve found is this rod was made in Detroit sometime in the 50′s by a company called Orchard Industries. It’s not fishable, most of the guides are rusted up pretty bad. I think one or two of them are rusted through. I wish it was because I’d love to see what this rod feels like. I need to pick up a fiberglass rod someday. I really like the classic look to them. This Actionglas is painted to look like bamboo. In the 60 years since that paint was applied some has chipped off. Then again, if I was a 60 year old fly rod, I’d hope I was showing a lot of wear and tear. Wall hangers look cool, but in the end, what’s the point?

FISHJERKS stickers and a pink worm

Just got home from work and there was a package for me. Seattle, WA. FJ on the return label. I was like
And then I was like
Cause I just got me some FISHJERKS schwag. This site is easily one of my favorites out of all the sites I visit every day. When you’re tired of same old same old, this dude is killin it with some originality that is hilarious.

That worm scared the hell out of me when the stickers fell out into my greedily awaiting hands. Just after work zombie, not expecting soft pink worm to tickle my fingers. After I realized that it wasn’t some weird Washingtonian stowaway, I was laughing my ass off at the epicness of the worm.

The Derp liked the worm too. He’s never seen a rubber worm. Being a fly fishing cat, he’s kind of an elitist and he didn’t like this rubber bass thing in his house. So he tried to eat it.

If you want some awesome stickers, hit up Fish Jerks and order you some. I’ve heard you won’t regret the contents of them.
