That fish is a rod thief

Sunday while taking a picture of a white bass Ian had caught I set my rod down to grab my camera. I thought I’d pulled my fly out of the water but I must not have. After a few photos and releasing his fish, we turned to see my rod disappearing under the water. We sat there dumbfounded for a few seconds and started searching for it. A few minutes later it surfaced about thirty feet away. We rowed over to it and using the GoPro on a pole, I was able to snag the rod and pull it to hand. I handed Ian the GoPro and landed the thief.

There’s a lesson to be learned here. If you set your rod down make sure you have your fly out of the water. While this was a cheap setup, this could have been disastrous for me. Had this been a larger fish, I might never have seen that rod and reel again.

So what did I learn from this? Never trust a fish.

Off the grid

Sometimes you need to get away from life. Work, bills, kids, dogs, cats, and mother in laws. This weekend my wife and I did just that. We rented a cabin in the Brown County hills that had three ponds on the property. When we pulled up to the cabin, it was almost dark; the woods making it seem closer to night than it really was. The crickets and night birds were beginning their chorus, the cabin looked a bit run down at first glance. My first thought was I paid a lot for this and this is what I’m getting? I’m glad looks are almost always deceiving because what looked shady at night turned out to be as charming as me in the daylight. I’m pretty damned charming when I need to be. Just ask my wife. She won’t lie, I swear.

PS, I love my mother in law and don’t have a kid or a dog. But I want a dog.
